The Once-ler is the narrator, the hidden main antagonist of The Lorax and the former secondary antagonist of the 2012 film of the same name. He was a greedy industrialist who cut down all of the beautiful, multi-colored Truffula Tree to make a peculiar garment known as a Thneed, ‘a Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need’.

The Once-ler has a descriptive title, not a name. Much like a baker bakes, the Once-ler onces. He’s a storyteller that recounts the events of the past. It’s derived from the popular first line “once upon a time”.

Who does the Once-ler represent? The Once-ler represents all the companies that do not care about the environment and only care about money. Who does “The Lorax” represent? The Lorax represents all the companies that are against dumping products in the animal’s environment.

While he is also just as bad in the film, otherwise even more noticeable than in the other adaptation and original, it is clear that he was not made entirely the villain in the film, leaving the blame almost entirely in some other created character that did not appear in the book.

The Once-ler is able to increase his production by investing in capital; he purchases machines to cut down trees, pave roads, and assemble thneeds, which helps him produce and sell more thneeds in a shorter amount of time as well as get them to more locations.

It also means that a specific subsection of the internet is now recoiling in fear, because of what happened last time there was an animated Dr. Seuss tale featuring a lanky antihero figure out in theaters. Namely, they’re freaking out that the Grinch will become the new Once-ler. And in 2012, it was the Once-ler.

Plot. He left his family when he was a young man, setting out to find the perfect material with which he could make his invention, the Thneed, a product that could do any job. The Once-ler soon makes a profit by selling Thneeds and so he calls his whole family down to satisfy demand.

Thneedville is a city in The Lorax. Thneedville was designed as a utopia town by the Once-ler to further advertise his product after which the place is named (the Thneed), but just as soon as his model was becoming a reality, the last Tuffula tree fell and the Thneed factory closed down.

He left behind a single word “unless”, and I believe this means that this environment is going to stay destroyed unless the Once-ler does something about it. These actions seam to imply that the Lorax understood that he must change his tactic and that he was very upset with what had happened.
