Our 4-pack will keep your hermit crabs happy for a long time. Place sponge in your crab’s water dish (the sponge should take up most of the dish area). in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to properly clean.

Every three or four days you should change the sponge in the crabitat, as it can collect and breed unhealthy bacteria. When you replace a sponge, thoroughly rinse the old one in hot water and give it a soak in a sea-salt solution.

Hermit crabs breathe through modified gills, which require moist air to function properly; if the humidity inside their enclosure becomes too dry, hermit crabs can suffocate. One of the most effective ways of maintaining the proper humidity is through daily misting of your hermit crab tank.

They will often stand still or hide in their shells if they are out adventuring in the dark and you flick on the light. Luckily any pet hermit crab owner can enjoy all the midnight hijinx just by getting a red “night” lamp and turning off other lights. Purple “moon light” lamps work, too.

If there is any opening, and a branch or other ornament that reaches that opening, a hermit crab will find a way to escape. Case in point: I have a glass lid on my crabitats. My jumbo crabs are strong enough to literally lift the glass lid, if they have a sturdy piece of wood to stand on near the top.

The average hermit crab sleeps for around 8 hours a day. Hermit crabs may be inactive or invisible for longer than this, though. Hermit crabs are nocturnal, sleeping at night to avoid the heat of the sun. Many hermit crabs remain in their shells while awake, only emerging and growing active when night has fallen.
