If possible, slip the crown back over the tooth. Before doing so, coat the inner surface with an over-the-counter temporary dental cement, toothpaste made for sensitivity, or denture adhesive, to help hold the crown in place. Do not use super glue!

You would need to gently clean the inside of the crown with toothpaste first. Then, use dental adhesive (or even toothpaste or sugar-free gum) to temporarily “glue” the crown back into its spot on your jawline. You can buy temporary dental cement at a pharmacy or grocery store.

The crown should be replaced immediately. Even if you have just 2 days until you have to go in for your permanent crown fixation, do not stay without a temporary crown. Without a temporary crown, the tooth will be more sensitive to hot and cold foods.

The best way to keep crowns in good condition is to keep the entire mouth clean and healthy. Brush twice a day and floss daily. Cleaning between the teeth with floss is extremely important if a person wants to keep plaque from damaging the crown and the teeth next to it.

If you didn’t have a root canal before your crown was placed, the tooth still has nerves in it. Sometimes, the crown puts pressure on a traumatized nerve, and an infection occurs. Or, infections can result from old fillings underneath the crown that leak bacteria that infects the nerve.

Treatment

1. Open up (incise) and drain the abscess. The dentist will make a small cut into the abscess, allowing the pus to drain out, and then wash the area with salt water (saline).
2. Perform a root canal. This can help eliminate the infection and save your tooth.
3. Pull the affected tooth.
4. Prescribe antibiotics.
