A hard-wired smoke detector usually chirps for one of three reasons: A dead battery Dust inside your smoke detector An old or malfunctioning detector

Hard-wired smoke detectors (which typically include a backup battery) are subject to similar issues as those that operate on a battery only. However, hard-wired units often require resetting after problems are addressed. Simply hold the reset button for 15 to 20 seconds to silence the noise.

The meaning of beeps, chirps and blinking lights varies depending on the FireX model. If the unit beeps or chirps once per minute, the battery needs to be replaced or the unit cleaned. If the unit goes off when there isn’t a fire, consider relocating it.

Press and hold the test button for at least 15 seconds. The unit may chirp or alarm for a few seconds before going silent. Reconnect the power and reinstall the battery. The unit will chirp once when the power is restored and should not chirp afterwards.”

Resetting the Alarm

1. Turn off the power to the smoke alarm at the circuit breaker.
2. Remove the smoke alarm from the mounting bracket and disconnect the power.
3. Remove the battery.
4. Press and hold the test button for at least 15 seconds.
5. Reconnect the power and reinstall the battery.

Here’s how to temporarily stop the smoke alarms chirping. Got through these quick troubleshooting steps: Find the reset button on the smoke detector. Hold the reset button down for 15–20 seconds, then release. Wait a couple of minutes and listen for the beeping to start up again.

Turn the power off to the hard wired smoke detector at the circuit box. Remove the face of the alarm. Use a vacuum or a small brush to clean out the smoke detector. If there’s a lot of dust build up, try using a mild detergent to help remove it. Replace the face of the detector and listen for the chirping sound.

Usually, when a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide alarm is chirping (one quick little beep every one to two minutes or so), it means the battery is dying. 1  Even if your smoke alarm is attached to your electrical system, it should have a battery backup.
