Typically, the basic “Plain” printing paper (such as Xerox Vitality Multipurpose Paper) is 20 lb/75 gsm paper. This paper is branded as multipurpose as it is a good weight for Digital Copiers and Printers, including Laser and Inkjet Printers, and is ideal for everyday use in Office environments.

Most printing paper has a gsm between 60 and 120. 80gsm is standard. Anything from 160gsm is considered card. GSM is a good guide to quality.

75-90 gsm – You’ll find this weight of paper in sketchpads or notebooks. It’s thick enough to draw on with pencil, but heavy ink or marker may bleed through. 90-100 gsm – This is the weight of most types of household printer paper. 120-140 gsm – The weight of your average promotional poster.

It makes particular sense when you have many images to print as lower GSM often mean the paper is cheaper to buy. 200gsm to 300gsm – Such weights are ideal for printing images when the keepsake element is clearly strong. The most common examples are greetings cards, invitation cards, gallery images and so on.

200 gsm paper is heavier stock, making it ideal for document covers or thick sheets. Card, ideal for document covers. 250 gsm paper is commonly used for greetings cards, invitations and booklet/brochure covers. Thick board stock, ideal for book covers, business cards etc.

Pearl Finish – Often used by professional photographers and graphic designers, it includes slightly higher glossiness compared to satin finish. It benefits from vibrant deep color results, but yet still has a lower reflection than the gloss paper. Available in micro/nano pores coating.

Inkjet Paper Weight (90 to 270 g/m2) range. If you print photos, you’ll want a paper in the heavier, thicker range, around 62 lbs. and higher. Paper with heavier weight looks and feels more substantial and leads to crisper text with less ink bleeding.

If your photos will be handled often, a matte finish would be a better option since they will not absorb the fingerprints of users. Because matte finishes are designed to refract as much light as possible, this comes at the cost of colors not appearing as vibrant as they do in glossy photos.

Print quality depends on the paper used. Good quality paper absorbs the right amount of ink. An ink-jet printer uses a printer cartridge that creates an image that is 300 x 300 dpi (dots per inch.) Most printer cartridge brands do not create a resolution that is true photo quality.

150gsm – 200gsm photo paper – As the paper weight increases (measured in GSM), the paper feels heavier to touch and more often used for image reproduction.
