Think of division as asking how many times one number “goes into” another. For example is asking how many times 1 goes into . The answer is . But if the second number is really small and close to zero, it will go into a bigger number a much larger number of times.

Multiplying and Dividing Decimals

1. First, you multiply the numbers just like normal, as if the decimal point wasn’t there.
2. Next, you need to add in the decimal point to the answer. This is the only tricky part. You add up the decimal places there are in the numbers you multiplied. Then you put that many decimal places in the answer.

To multiply a decimal number by a whole number, follow these steps:

The distance of a number from 0 on a number line is called as the absolute value. For instance, 3 is three away from 0. Hence, absolute value of 3 is 3. -8 is 8 away from 0.

Absolute value of a number is the distance from zero on the number line. So, in the above example both the numbers are 3 units away from 0 on the number line.
