Create travel routes or areas of interest

1. On your computer, sign in to My Maps.
2. Open or create a map.
3. In the map legend, click Add layer.
4. Give the new layer a name.
5. Under the new layer, click Import.
6. Choose or upload the file or photos containing your info, then click Select.
7. Map features are added automatically.

To find the exact GPS latitude and longitude coordinates of a point on a map along with the altitude/elevation above sea level, simply drag the marker in the map below to the point you require. Alternatively enter the location name in the search bar then drag the resulting marker to the precise position.

Use coordinates to search

1. Open Google Earth.
2. In the Search box in the left-hand panel, enter coordinates using one of these formats: Decimal Degrees: such as 37.7°, -122.2°
3. Google Earth zooms into that location and coordinates will be displayed in the lower right corner.

1. Open Google Earth.
2. Go to a place on the map.
3. Above the map, click Add Path . To add a shape, click Add Polygon.
4. A “New Path” or “New Polygon” dialog will pop up.
5. To draw the line or shape you want, click a start point on the map and drag.
6. Click an endpoint.
7. Click OK.

Google Maps

1. Click “Grid Reference Tools” and choose “Get Grid Reference from Map”. By clicking on the desired location, the 6-figure Grid reference will be shown.
2. Click “Location Search Tools” and enter a place name (this does not work with post codes). The map will centre on the place name, if found.

Then go to Tools>Options>3D View>Show lat/long. Select MGRS.

Click on the ‘Find by Grid Reference’ menu option, this will display the Go To Location search box. Enter in the X and Y co-ordinates (Eastings and Northings) in to the relevant boxes and click ‘Go’. The selected location should now be shown in the middle of map window.

You can search for a place using its latitude and longitude GPS coordinates….Enter coordinates to find a place

1. On your computer, open Google Maps.
2. In the search box at the top, type your coordinates.
3. You’ll see a pin show up at your coordinates.

As we already said, when giving a four-figure grid reference, always give the eastings number first and the northings number second. An easy way to remember this is to keep in mind the letters HV (High Voltage), that is horizontal reading first followed the vertical reading.

The vertical lines are called eastings. They are numbered – the numbers increase to the east. The horizontal lines are called northings as the numbers increase in an northerly direction.

Easting and northing are geographic Cartesian coordinates for a point. Easting is the eastward-measured distance (or the x-coordinate) and northing is the northward-measured distance (or the y-coordinate).
