Elevation is distance above sea level. Elevations are usually measured in meters or feet. They can be shown on maps by contour lines, which connect points with the same elevation; by bands of color; or by numbers giving the exact elevations of particular points on the Earths surface.

To use the elevation finder tool:

1. Zoom and pan the map to find the desired location.
2. Click on the map to place a marker.
3. You will then see the estimated elevation displayed below the map.
4. Click again to place further markers and find the elevation.

2. In the search box at the top, type your coordinates.
3. You’ll see a pin show up at your coordinates.

The first number is always the latitude and the second is the longitude. It easy to remember which is which if you think of the two coordinates in alphabetical terms: latitude comes before longitude in the dictionary. For example, the Empire State Building lies at 40.748440°, -73.984559°.

If you’re using a map with longitude and latitude lines, stick a pin where you’re located. Then, draw a straight horizontal line from your point to the east or west edge of the map. Then, draw a vertical line from your location to the north or south edge of the map. Put together the 2 coordinates to find your position.

Get the coordinates of a place

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Maps app .
2. Touch and hold an area of the map that isn’t labeled. You’ll see a red pin appear.
3. You’ll see the coordinates in the search box at the top.

Tell students that the lines running across the page are lines of latitude, and the lines running up and down the page are lines of longitude. Latitude runs 0–90° north and south. Longitude runs 0–180° east and west.

The easiest way to remember the difference between latitude and longitude is by associating the terms with different parts of a ladder. Lines of latitude run east and west. Lines of latitude run horizontally around the Earth and tell you how far north or south you are from the Equator.

The tropic of cancer is the most important latitude of the country

• It also divides the country into two climatic zones.

• the Tropic of Cancer (23.5° north)
• the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° south)
• the Arctic circle (66.5° north)
• the Antarctic circle (66.5° south)
• the North Pole (90° north)
• the South Pole (90° south)

The reason for the location of the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn at roughly 23.5 degrees north and south, respectively, is due to the axial tilt of the Earth. The Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees from the plane of the Earth’s revolution around the sun each year.
