Like footnotes (which are used in this article), endnotes serve two main purposes in a research paper: (1) They acknowledge the source of a quotation, paraphrase, or summary; and (2) They provide explanatory comments that would interrupt the flow of the main text.

In Chicago style, footnotes or endnotes are used to reference pieces of work in the text. To cite from a source a superscript number is placed after a quote or a paraphrase. If using endnotes, numbered notes will appear on a separate, endnotes page at the end of your document and before the bibliography page.

When using endnotes, your quoted or paraphrased sentence or summarized material is followed by a superscript number. Example: Let’s say that you have quoted a sentence from Lloyd Eastman’s history of Chinese social life.

You do not have to use both. That said, if your teacher says to use both, then you do. 1 Footnotes are the small notations at the bottom of the page giving the citations or extra information for only that page. Endnotes, on the other hand, have all the citations and notes together at the end.

You can use “ibid.” for consecutive citations of a source. This means citing the same source twice or more in succession. “Ibid.” is fine by itself for citing the same page twice in a row, but you should provide a page number if you’re citing a different part of the text.

From The Chicago Manual of Style, section 14.34: You may use the Latin abbreviation “Ibid.” when referring to a single work cited in the note immediately preceding. For example: 5.

Ibid. is an abbreviation for ibidem, meaning “in the same place.” The current (17th) edition of the Chicago manual discourages the use of Ibid. and instead recommends use of shortened form for all repeat citations.

cit. is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase opus citatum or opere citato, meaning “the work cited” or in the cited work, respectively.

Abbreviations: Use “ibid.” (no italics) to refer to the only work cited in the preceding note. It may or may not include a page number (Ibid., 43.). Ibid. is never used if the preceding note consists of more than one source.

If you cite one source multiple times, use ibid or supra after the first citation rather than repeating the full citation. Ibid is used when referring to the same source in the footnote immediately above. Supra is used when referring to the same source in a footnote that is not immediately above.

Use Ibid. when citing a source that you just cited in the previous footnote. (Ibid. is an abbreviation of ibidem meaning “from the same place.)” Because Ibid. is an abbreviation, a period is always included after Ibid..

Ibid. is a Latin word, short for ibidem, which means the same place. It is the term used to provide an endnote or footnote citation or reference for a source that was cited in the preceding endnote or footnote.

“Id.” is an all-purpose short form citation that may be used for any cited authority except internal cross-references. “Id.” always refers to the immediately proceeding cited authority, either in the same footnote or the previous footnote so long as it is the only authority cited in the proceeding footnote.

ID means “Identity”.

“Id.” is the short form used to refer to the immediately preceding citation. The main purpose of “id.” is to save space and reduce the amount of citation clutter. However, “id.” should only be used in certain circumstances to avoid confusion: 1.
