Compress a picture

There is no “critical point” up to which compression works perfectly, but beyond which it becomes impossible. When there is some tolerance for loss, the compression factor can be greater than it can when there is no loss tolerance. For this reason, graphic images can be compressed more than text files or programs.

The objective of image compression is to reduce the redundancy of the image and to store or transmit data in an efficient form. At its core, image compression is when you remove or group together certain parts of an image file in order to reduce its size.

1. Select the picture you want to compress.
2. Click the Picture Tools Format tab, and then click Compress Pictures.

1. Open Microsoft Paint.
2. Pick an image, then use the resize button.

To resize an image with Gimp, simply open your image in the application. Go to Image, then Scale, where you can input your desired dimensions. Finally, under the Quality, choose Sinc as Interpolation and then click Scale. There you have it, an image resize with sustained quality.

Scan your document at a lower resolution (96 DPI). Crop the image to remove any empty space around it. Shrink the image. Save the file in JPG format instead.

First, open your file in Preview by selecting the file in Finder, hitting Space, and then clicking the “Open with Preview” button. In Preview, head to File > Export. In the export window, select the “Reduce File Size” option from the “Quartz-Filter” drop-down menu and then click the “Save” button.

How to Compress BMP Files

1. Launch Windows Explorer or My Computer.
