The Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s political and religious leader, took over the hostage situation, refusing all appeals to release the hostages, even after the U.N. On the day of Reagan’s inauguration, the United States freed almost $8 billion in frozen Iranian assets, and the hostages were released after 444 days.

With the completion of negotiations signified by the signing of the Algiers Accords on January 19, 1981, the hostages were released on January 20, 1981. That day, minutes after President Reagan completed his 20‑minute inaugural address after being sworn in, the 52 American hostages were released to U.S. personnel.

The toll of patient diplomacy was great, but President Carter’s actions brought freedom for the hostages with America’s honor preserved. Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, Shah of Iran, began his reign in 1941, succeeding his father, Reza Khan, to the throne.

They decided to smuggle the six Americans out of Iran on an international flight by using Canadian passports for them.

Based on the true story of the 1979 hostage crisis in Tehran, Argo portrays the eventual rescue of six American diplomats by CIA agents posing as a film crew. Dozens of Americans were held hostage for 444 days, but six American diplomats were able to escape, hiding out in the residence of the Canadian ambassador.

On November 4, 1979, just after the Shah arrived in New York, a group of pro-Ayatollah students smashed the gates and scaled the walls of the American embassy in Tehran. Once inside, they seized 66 hostages, mostly diplomats and embassy employees. By midsummer 1980, 52 hostages remained in the embassy compound.

Although most of the movie takes place in Tehran, Iran, not a single minute of film was shot there. Other than location shoots in Istanbul, Turkey and Washington, D.C., the majority of Argo was filmed in Los Angeles.

The script used for the fake film project was based on the 1967 science fiction novel “Lord of Light” by Roger Zelazny. In real-life, Make-up Artist John Chambers (played by John Goodman) came up with the title “Argo”, because he loved knock-knock jokes.

The movie also makes no mention of Sheardown, the First Secretary at the embassy. Sheardown died on Dec. 30, and his wife, Zena, called the movie disappointing. “It was frustrating,” Zena Sheardown said about “Argo” in an interview with The Associated Press after her husband’s death.
