Louis XIV died in 1715, four days shy of his 77th birthday, from gangrene associated with an infection in his leg.

When Louis XIV was growing up Cardinal Mazzarin, who ruled during Louis’s childhood, crushed an uprising by the nobles who were alarmed by the growing power of the monarchy. He required the nobility to live at Versailles in order to get political favors.

On September 1, 1715, four days before his 77th birthday, Louis XIV died of gangrene at Versailles. His reign had lasted 72 years, longer than that of any other known European monarch, and left an indelible mark on the culture, history and destiny of France.
