Rapid changes present complex development challenges in the Himalayan region. The frequency of floods and droughts seems to be on the rise, as is the demand for water, food and energy. Migration is common in the Himalayas, with large numbers of males leaving the countryside to find work in urban centres.

Water scarcity is a major issue in rural watersheds in the Middle Mountains of Nepal and in the entire Hindu Kush–Himalaya region. Dense population and heavy dependence on irrigated agriculture place immense pressure on available water resources, which have a distinct seasonality.

Nepal is topographically divided into three regions: the Himalaya to the north, the middle hills consisting of the Mahabharat range and the Churia Hills, and the Terai to the south. The Himalaya and its foothills make up the northern border of the country and represent 16% of the total land area.

The Nepali name Kathmandu comes from Kasthamandap, which stood in the Durbar Square. In Sanskrit, Kāṣṭha (Sanskrit: काष्ठ) means “wood” and Maṇḍapa (Sanskrit: मण्डप) means “pavilion”. This public pavilion, also known as Maru Satta in Newari, was rebuilt in 1596 by Biseth in the period of King Laxmi Narsingh Malla.

It is not likely to snow in the Kathmandu city area but at the outskirts of Kathmandu, at slightly high elevation, you will notice snowfall. Therefore, if you really want to enjoy snowfall, you don’t have to travel long distances outside Kathmandu.

Kathmandu is ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world, which is why it’s sometimes called Maskmandu. The city’s traffic department and local authorities have tried to keep the air clean by banning vehicles older than 20 years.
