Point the hour hand (the little one) at the sun. Imagine there is a line down the middle of the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o clock mark. The line down the middle of the angle is pointing South; so the opposite direction is North.

Say it is two o’clock, draw an imaginary line between the hour hand and twelve o’clock to create the north-south line. You know the sun rises in the east and sets in the west so this will tell you which way is north and which way south. If you are in the Southern Hemisphere then it will be the other way round.

What direction does my house face?

1. Go to the front door of your home and open the compass app.
2. With your phone facing forward, read the direction that the compass is measuring (this should be shown in °).
3. If the reading is between 270° and 90°, your house is north-facing.

To read your compass,

1. Hold your compass steadily in your hand so the baseplate is level and the direction-of-travel arrow is pointing straight away from you.
2. Hold it about halfway between your face and waist in a comfortable arm position with your elbow bent and compass held close to your stomache.

Compass housing is the turning dial on the compass. The numbers around the outside of the dial are degrees. There are 360 degrees or azimuths. They represent 360 directions that you can travel from any point. The four cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west and are stated as N, E, S, and W respectively.

The RED part of the Compass Needle points NORTH. The Compass Housing can turn. The Base should point in the direction of travel.

Since north is zero(0) degrees, true north would be what appears on this compass as 15 degrees (half way between 0 and 30 degrees). If however, you are in a region with a 15 degree east declination (say somewhere on the West coast of US) the needle is actually pointing 15 degrees further east than true north.

The red and black arrow is called the compass needle. On some compasses it might be red and white for instance, but the point is, the red part of it is always pointing towards the earth’s magnetic north pole. There is a turn able thing on your compass called the Compass housing.

The most important part on the compass is the magnetic needle. It swings around the compass as you move, but the red end will always point in the direction of north and the white (or sometimes black) end will always point in the direction of south.

It’s used to take your compass bearing. Orienting lines sit inside the compass housing. They align with the horizontal lines on a map (easting lines) to make sure you align with grid north: the top of your map.
