Soil erosion is a global problem that threatens food security and the functioning of ecosystems. It has an adverse effect on water and air and, of course, on the soil itself.

Ploughing, unsuitable agricultural practices, combined with deforestation and overgrazing, are the main causes of human-induced soil erosion (7, 8). The major anthropogenic drivers of erosion are land use and potentially climate change through a more intense hydrological cycle (10).

Soil erosion is not only an environmental issue; it also causes huge losses to the economy. One study estimated global economic losses from soil erosion to be around $8 billion, due to reduced soil fertility, decreased crop yields and increased water usage.

However, erosion is more severe now: globally, moderate to severe soil degradation affects almost 2 000 million hectares of arable and grazing land – an area larger than that of the United States and Mexico combined. More than 55 percent of this damage is caused by water erosion and nearly 33 percent by wind erosion.

Land degradation Each year, about 75 billion tons of soil is eroded from the land—a rate that is about 13–40 times as fast as the natural rate of erosion. Approximately 40% of the world’s agricultural land is seriously degraded.
