Get in touch with local junkyards and ask if they will pay for your tires and rims. Junk dealers often take items that they can resell to recycling centers. Place an ad on the Internet offering scrap tires for sale. Scrap tires can be used for many purposes, including buffers in gardens and swings in playgrounds.

How to Sell Old Rims for Scrap

Short Answer: Discount Tire sells used tires, and while it will not provide warranties for these tires, the company assures that it doesn’t stock excessively old or worn tires. Discount Tire does not buy used tires, but it may allow you to trade-in your used tires for a credit toward your new tire purchase.

You can expect to see somewhere around 50 cents per pound or a little more for aluminum rims. If you have a significant load of rims, be sure to separate out any that are alloy. The lowest value item in the pile decides the price for the whole pile, so be sure your best rims are in a pile all by themselves.

Factors That Affect Cost

Many cast aluminum wheels from the car manufacturers weigh nearly as much as the steel models. For example, the 16-inch by 6.5-inch steel wheels on the Chevrolet Cobalt and Malibu weigh 19.2 lb. each and the optional aluminum wheels weigh 18.9 lb.

They offer performance advantages over steel wheels, as they are often several pounds lighter per wheel – less weight means quicker acceleration and faster stopping. Bigger wheels cost more money. The bigger you go, the more expensive the wheels and tires. A 17-inch alloy wheel on a Camry XLE, however, was $379. For an 18-inch alloy wheel on a Chevrolet Traverse, one dealer quoted us a price of $371, but for an optional 20-inch wheel, the price was $569.

Yaris alloys seem to last 2-3 years. The cross spoke alloys I had on a BMW were perfect when the car was 10 years old. Ford alloys seem to last very well.. Fiesta ones are perfect after 5 years (apart from mild kerbing: and even then the lacquer is not peeling).

One cost I didn’t expect to see here are the wheels. Most of us keep the wheels on our cars for the lifetime of said car unless they get significantly damaged before then. Not so for the Bugatti, as the manufacturer recommends replacing them every 10,000 miles for a cost of $50,000.
