There is no practical limit to the size fish that can be landed on ten pound line. A lot depends on the skill of the angler. The quality and smoothness of the drag on the reel and the ability to follow the fish to enable not running out of line and to keep excess line out of the water.

Fishing line with a 10lb rating means that 10 pounds of fish pressure will break the line. This isn’t always the upper limit, however; sometimes you can catch much larger fish on a 10lb line. Usually, the size of the fish you can catch depends on the skill of the angler more than anything else.

Catfish, bass, panfish, walleye can all be caught on 8lb line. You’ve got some great fishing in your state. Fishing Lake of the Woods is on my bucket list. If you know how to properly set your drag and reel fish in, then you can catch pretty much any fish in Minnesota.

High quality, braided fishing line lasts for many years without needing replacement. However, monofilament and fluorocarbon line will eventually go bad after a couple seasons of use in the water. Even unused fishing line will loose peak performance after a few years if stored improperly.

Monofilament lines should be changed at least once a year, though many anglers recommend changing them after every fishing trip. Their durability depends on how much you use them: If you are a heavy fisher, you should change monofilament line 3 to 4 times a year. Moderate fishers can change it 2 to 3 times a year.

Braided line, when treated properly, can be used in the water for years. Monofilament and fluorocarbon do, however, come with what you might call a “shelf life.” Like meat and produce, even if you put it in the refrigerator, these lines will eventually go bad, even if they haven’t been taken out of the packaging.

Sure, most folks think low-vis green is the best line color, and it sure does have great applications in many water conditions, while others believe red is invisible, yet the science of blue water fish optics says that blue line is most likely to disappear in the deepest water column.

The best color to use when you’re fishing with braid is white, blue, or green. Both white and blue work really well in clearer water while a darker green works in stained or muddy water.

Historically, braided fishing line has wreaked havoc on aluminum fishing guides because of the increased abrasion. The braided line on today’s market doesn’t cause the same kind of damage its older versions did. The quality braided fishing line that is on the market today is designed to work with most rods.

So, Do You Have to Use a Leader with Braided Line? Yes, it is always a good idea to put a mono or fluorocarbon line leader on your braided line when fishing. The benefits of using a leader line strongly outweigh not using it.

Today’s anglers use braid for numerous applications — not only for its tensile strength, but because of the way it behaves on the spool, particularly with spinning reels. Braid combats line twist better than mono or fluoro, and if used in lighter pound tests, it will outcast them as well.

Regrettably for the disabled, braided lines are being banned at some fisheries and club waters because of their misuse by some anglers. In other words fishing in swims and areas which shouldn’t be fished in at all.

I found out that braided line can be used on a spinning reel and I decided to use it on both my rods.
