Score for each gymnast is determined by adding together the score for the routine’s content (Difficulty Score) and execution (Execution Score). Each routine was given a start value, and the actual score was the total of credit given for the routine minus deductions for execution.

In New Level 3 & 4, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, athletes are required to score a minimum of an 8.5 on each event and a 34.0 All Around before being eligible to move up. In New Level 5, athletes are required an 8.3 on events and a 33.5 All Around.

It is usually, on average, from ages 8 – 10 years old. No matter – many gymnasts, including college age gymnasts learn new and difficult skills.

Gymnasts must enter at Level 1 but may progress through the events and skills at different levels. Athletes may not skip any level (exception… Level 6 may be skipped, see below). A gymnast may not advance to Level 4 until she has completed the requirements as listed in the Entry and Mobility chart (page 79).

If there’s no fall, the maximum deduction cannot exceed 0.80.

A fall off the balance beam—that’s one point off. For insufficient height of flight on the vault or uneven bars, deductions range from one-tenth to half a point.

If an athlete steps on the white tape on floor exercise, it is NOT out of bounds but if any part of her foot goes over the tape then it is considered out and a . 1 deduction is taken. Thanks again for your interest and support of the Gymdogs.

Each judge deducts 0.50 for the “spot”. 2. If the gymnast falls after the “spot”, an additional 0.50 deduction is taken for the fall.

Falling is more costly and counts of half a point from the gymnast’s total score. On bars, missed handstands are normally .

“Play a character” during your floor routine. According to the Code of Points, the “inability to play a role or a character” throughout the floor routine is a one-tenth deduction. A minor deduction, to be sure, but a requirement that could send a gymnast into an existential crisis.

Lack of Toe point The deduction for not pointing your feet is small, but it can add up throughout your routines. Judges take . 05 off your score each time you perform a skill without pointed feet.

Split the beam means to land on the beam with one leg either side of the beam, by accident of course.

Preparing Physically

• Practice the routines you will perform in your meet.
• Focus on details such as dismounts, dance and landings.
• Plan your warm-up time.
• Have a practice meet.
• Modify your conditioning.
• Eat well and stay hydrated.
• Visualize the gymnast you want to be at your meet.
• Try mental choreography.

Judges are looking for things like amplitude, expression, maturity, confidence, and personal style on these events in the way that the gymnast performs her routine. Specific deductions are used when a gymnast fails to demonstrate these qualities.
