British usage favours omitting the full stop in abbreviations which include the first and last letters of a single word, such as Mr, Mrs, Ms, Dr and St; American usage prefers (A) Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr. and St., with full stops. Most other abbreviated titles, however, require a full stop, as shown above.

A noun that names any person , place or thing is a common noun. Sea, birds, ocean, fish, sharks.

Capitalize general nouns such as ocean, mountain, and lake, when writing proper names for individual geographic features: The Indian Ocean is deeper than the Atlantic Ocean. The Blue Ridge Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountains.

Street names are always capitalized, too (e.g., Main Street).

St with or without a period is a standard abbreviation for Street. Technically, a period (in American English) is the more correct, formal rendition.

A period is required when abbreviating inches as a way of distinguishing the measurement from the preposition “in.” However, only one period is needed if an abbreviated measurement of inches falls at the end of the sentence.

Are AM and PM Capitalized In Sentences? Regardless of where or what you’re writing, the consensus is to capitalize AM and PM. Like these other acronyms, that also means you should leave out any punctuation or periods.

The 24-hour format will not have the dot in the corner to indicate the time is in PM. The dot on the digital display will appear only when the clock is showing PM time in the 12-hour format.

AM and PM as Lowercase Letters. There are a few generally accepted ways to write these abbreviations in your writing. The first and most common way to write them is with lowercase “a.m.” and “p.m.” This way requires periods, and both Chicago Style and AP Style recommend this way of writing the abbreviations.

PM – Pre Midnight, this is the time Pre (Before Midnight). This is the time from Noon to Midnight. AM comes first in the alphabet and therefore also first on a day (Morning) and PM comes last (afternoon/night).

Time. There is no space between the number and the am/pm definer. Do not use full stops in ‘am’ or ‘pm’. Use a full stop rather than a colon to separate the minutes from the hours.

From the Latin words meridies (midday), ante (before) and post (after), the term ante meridiem (a.m.) means before midday and post meridiem (p.m.) means after midday. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language states “By convention, 12 AM denotes midnight and 12 PM denotes noon.

12 a.m. is midnight. 12 p.m. is midday. After 12 a.m. it is morning. After 12 p.m. it is afternoon.

Latin ante meridiem and post meridiem

The simplest way to remember them is that one of the two refers to a morning while the other one is an afternoon. Also once you have memorized AM and PM but you’re still confused which is which, again the simplest method is alphabetical. “A” comes before “P” so “AM” comes first, then “PM”.

The 12-hour system divides the 24 hours of a day into two periods lasting 12 hours each. The first 12-hour period is designated as am. It runs from midnight to noon. The second period, marked pm, covers the 12 hours from noon to midnight.

Singular, Plural and Is, am, are Am is used with first person singular (I) Is – is used with third person singular (he, she, Ramu, Manisha) Are – is used with third person plural (They, Indians, judges)

In terms of appropriateness, “I am” is the most formal and is almost always safe to use. In descending order of formality: I am – In business writing especially to someone from another company and other situations where a formal tone is appropriate, use: “I am” I’m – Usually ok except in formal writing.

‘Noon’ means ‘midday’ or 12 in the afternoon. The standard way of writing this therefore would be 12pm. Alternatively, you could use the 24-hour clock system, where 12:00 is noon and 24:00 (or 00:00) is midnight.

Midday and midnight conventions There are no standards established for the meaning of 12am and 12pm. It is often said that 12am Monday is midnight on Monday morning and 12pm is midday. This puts all the times beginning with 12 and ending with am in the same one-hour block, similarly with those ending with pm.
