After Adolf Hitler took his own life on April 30, 1945, and Soviet forces captured Berlin on May 2, only one prize remained for the Allies: Berchtesgaden, the town near Adolf Hitler’s mountaintop retreat, the Obersalzberg (Eagle’s Nest), where many of the highest-ranking Nazi leaders had homes.

Pistone, album in hand, returned home after surviving the battlefields in Europe. He finished college, got into the restaurant business and had five children. The album mostly stayed up on a shelf at his home in Beachwood, Ohio, but he’d occasionally take it down and let family members look through it.

The Eagle’s Nest was not hit during the airstrike on 25th April 1945 and still exists in its original form today. Its name was coined by a French diplomat who supposedly gave the building the nickname “Eagle’s Nest”. Today, the building is used as a mountain inn.
