Mare ultimately chooses to die than become Maven’s “Red Queen.” Mare and Cal are dressed for the arena in a cheaper version of the training suites. Then they are dragged to the gates by Rane Arven and forced to watch Mare’s guard, Lucas Samos, be executed right in front of them.

How does Red Queen end? Elana uses Cal to kill the King with his own sword and he and Mare are arrested and Maven is crowned King. Mare and Cal are to fight the house’s best fighters to the death. Arven neutralizes Mare’s power, but she manages to trick another fighter and Arven is killed.

In Red Queen, Mare Barrow is a Latina with brown skin, and so, at last, I have an opportunity to relate to the character; it feels like a breath of fresh air.

With each attempt to remove Mare from his mind, Elara has made Maven’s love for Mare twisted and turned it into an obsession. Even though Mare hated Maven, she was conflicted, always wondering about the boy beneath and the memories of who she thought he was.

Cal, Mare reminds herself, is forbidden. Then Cal kisses Mare. She thinks about how she is betraying “my cause, Maven, and myself, but I don’t want to stop.” She thinks again of Julian’s warning that “Anyone can betray anyone.” She knows she and Cal are doomed to be enemies, but for now she enjoys the moment.

Sometime in the future, Mare and Cal have two children, Shade and Coriane Calore.

Mare’s earrings are a set of gemstones that she wears in each ear. Cal gives her a fifth set after her escape from Maven, but she does not put it in her ear.

After two months, Mare and Cal see each other again. They are distant at first but then are brought back together by Evangeline. They decide to go to Paradise Valley for a few weeks to have some alone time. Sometime in the future, Mare and Cal have two children, Shade and Coriane Calore.

As part of the alliance between Norta and the Rift, Evangeline is once again betrothed to Cal, which breaks her heart and results in her not speaking to her father for weeks.

Mare still distrusts Maven. And although Maven is still obsessed with Mare, he ended up choosing another fate. Cal is still “in love” with Mare (as she is with him) and technically single, even though their chances of remaining together have greatly diminished.

Mare faces him bravely, even though Maven found a dagger during his search. The two fight and Maven breaks Mare’s collarbone and almost kills her. However, Mare is able to grab the dagger and kill Maven before passing out herself.
