As of 2020, Norwegian citizens will be allowed dual citizenship. Starting January 2020, you will no longer automatically lose your Norwegian citizenship by becoming a citizen of another country.

Norwegian Citizenship. It is possible for citizens of other countries to become citizens of Norway. However, it is not an easy process! Generally speaking, you will need to have had legal residency in Norway for at least seven years to be able to apply.

If you were born on 1 September 2006 or later and you have a Norwegian mother or father, you automatically became a Norwegian citizen at birth. This applies regardless of whether you were born in Norway or abroad, and regardless of whether or not your parents were married.

You must have lived in Norway for a total of at least three years during the past ten years. You must still be married, registered partners or cohabitants and live together at the time of the decision. You must meet the requirements for a permanent residence permit in Norway.

Countries that do not recognize dual citizenship are:

• Azerbaijan.
• Bahamas.
• Bahrain.
• Belarus.
• Botswana.
• Bhutan.
• China.

Assuming that you retain your U.S. citizenship, having citizenship from another country would have no effect on your Social Security benefits or options.

U.S. law allows you to keep foreign citizenships even after you naturalize as a U.S. citizen. So you can become a U.S. citizen and keep your Canadian and Israeli citizenships. You can carry three passports. That’s true despite the fact that the U.S. naturalization oath requires you to renounce all foreign citizenships.

• Descendants of those persecuted. Portugal Sephardic Jewish citizenship. German and Austrian citizenship for Nazi victims.

But you’ll have to follow these steps for naturalization:

1. Meet the residency requirements.
2. Establish permanent residency.
3. Pass the citizenship test.
4. Pass an in-person interview.
