Mariupol International Airport (Ukrainian: Міжнародний аеропорт Маріуполь, Russian: Международный аэропорт Мариуполь) (IATA: MPW, ICAO: UKCM), previously known as Zhdanov Airport, is the currently closed main airport of the large, industrial city and port of Mariupol and is located 5km from the city.

Mariupol is located in the south of the Donetsk Oblast, on the coast of Sea of Azov and at the mouth of Kalmius River. To the east of Mariupol is the Khomutov Steppe, which is also part of the Azov Lowland, located on the border with Russia.

Its central economic engine is two smoke-belching Soviet-era steel plants, owned by the Ukrainian oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, which have created one of the worst air- and water-pollution emergencies in Europe.

Mariupol is a costal industrial city on the sea of Azov, at the mouth of Kalmius river, only 116 km from Donetsk. There is beach and sea side access but it is not the resort type atmosphere that is found in other regions of the Ukraine.

The nearest district to modern Mariupol was the Kalmiusskya District, but its border did not extend to the mouth of the Kalmius River, although this area had been part of its migratory territory.
