Hundreds of officers working with forces across England and Wales could be affected by the new tests for colour vision deficiency (CVD), also known as colour blindness. Those speaking out against the new regulations say the condition makes little or no difference to the officers’ ability to do their jobs.

The test consists of 9 colored (PIP) plates, contains a circle of dots appearing randomized in color and size. Within the pattern are dots, which form a number, difficult to see with a red-green color blindness.

Satendra Singh, Coordinator of the Enabling Unit (for persons with disabilities), UCMS and GTB Hospital, said: “High-grade colour vision is required for IPS, RPF and other police services. Low-grade colour vision is acceptable for the other services under Civil Services Examination (CSE).”

Blindness is the inability to see anything, including light. If you’re partially blind, you have limited vision. For example, you may have blurry vision or the inability to distinguish the shapes of objects. Complete blindness means you can’t see at all.

There are a few different types of color deficiency that can be separated into three different categories: red-green color blindness, blue-yellow color blindness, and the much more rare complete color blindness.

Globally, 1 in 12 males and 1 in 200 females are colorblind. Current research states that color blindness affects roughly 8 percent of Caucasian males.

Many people wonder if laser eye surgery is an effective treatment for color blindness, but it is unfortunately not an effective intervention for the condition. Laser eye surgery is able to make physical changes to the cornea, a part of the eye that is not related to color vision deficiencies.

Currently, there’s no cure or treatment option available for deuteranopia. However, corrective contact lenses or glasses may help neutralize red-green color blindness. These come in the form of tinted lenses or filters that go over your glasses and can help you see reds and greens more clearly.
