Completion of the budding yeast genome sequencing project helped to determine a total of 6,275 genes on 16 chromosomes (12 million base pairs).

Both haploid and diploid yeast cells divide by budding (see Figure 2). The cell division cycle begins with a single, unbudded cell (Pringle & Hartwell 1981; Byers 1981). This cell buds, the bud grows to nearly the size of the parent cell, the nucleus divides, and the two cells separate into two unbudded cells.

Seeds will germinate promptly and uniformly after stratification. Unstratified seeds may take up to two years to germinate, if they are able to germinate at all. Pine cones should be collected in the fall when the cones begin to crack and open.

A Time and Labor Intensive Harvest For the most part, the seeds are harvested by hand, a contributing factor to their expensive price tag. The pine seeds are found in the pine cones and take about 18 months to mature. All of the above factors contribute to the understandably high price of the pine nut.

Mature pine cones are woody and brown in appearance. One cone produces about two seeds beneath each scale. These seeds will remain in the cone until it dries out and opens up completely. Seed in pine cones can usually be identified by the prominent-looking wing, which is attached to the seed for aid in dispersal.
