We have asked for a meeting with the President. I would like to be the president of a big company. In the first, the title the President is capitalized because it is a title referring to a specific person; in the second, there is no capital, because the word president does not refer to anyone in particular.

Since “Academy Awards” and “Oscars” are both trademarked, AP Style holds that they should be capitalized when appearing in your text. But when “the academy” and “the awards” stand alone, they should be lowercase.

If you use “The Academy” as a short form of the name, especially if your audience knows automatically that whenever you say “The Academy” you mean “Saint John Academy”, then capitalize it.

Evidence on the performance of academies compared to local authority schools is mixed, but on the whole suggests there is no substantial difference in performance.

The word “president” is a proper noun or a common noun depending on the context in which it is used, so the capitalization rules vary. If President is used to refer to a specific person with a title, then it is capitalized such as: President Barack Obama.

The Associated Press style is the go-to style for journalism and news writing. It covers magazine writing, too. The AP style (as it’s known in the trade) is quite different from The New York Times style or Chicago Manual of Style.

Do not indent the first line of a paragraph. Use AP Style rules for punctuation. Single space the article. Use only a single space after a period.

Use figures and spell out words like inches, feet, yards, etc., to indicate depth, height, length, and width. You should hyphenate adjectival form before nouns. For example, He is 5 feet 6 inches tall.

Effective May 1, the AP will spell out state names in the body of stories. Datelines will continue to use abbreviations. SPELL OUT: The names of the 50 U.S. states should be spelled out when used in the body of a story, whether standing alone or in conjunction with a city, town, village or military base.

[1] The letters D.C. each get a period, since they are abbreviations for the term District of Columbia. Like a state name (“Gary, Indiana, is my home, sweet home”) it is set off by commas before and after. The Capital Beltway is named after the city, so it is spelled with an a.

A comma must follow both the city and the state when they appear together at the beginning or middle of a sentence. A comma is missing after the city’s name.
