Microsoft is removing its requirement for an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play free-to-play multiplayer games today. The software maker has been testing this removal over the past few weeks, and now every Xbox One and Xbox Series S / X owner will be able to play free multiplayer games without Xbox Live Gold.

After refusing to log out for more than three weeks, the last person in Xbox Live on an original Xbox succumbed. Multiplayer Halo 2 is no more. On April 15, Microsoft turned off access to Xbox Live to anyone using an original Xbox.

To play Halo: The Master Chief Collection online on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console: You need an Xbox network account. If you don’t have one, you can create one for free. You need an active Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Xbox Live Gold is a subscription-based service that can be purchased in one month, three month, and one-year periods. Xbox Live Gold subscriptions are $59.99 for 12 months, $24.99 for three months, and $9.99 for one month.
