On “The Amazing Race,” as with other competition shows, contestants are paid on a sliding scale based upon how they place in the competition. (These dollar amounts don’t include things the show pays for, such as the vacation the losers get sent on .)

They can’t bring their own money. Contestants must leave their wallets at home. No cash, no credit card, nothing. Instead, production gives each team a sum of money at the start of each leg to cover the expense of lodging, food, supplies, and anything else they might need.

The average length of each race is approximately 21 to 30 days.

Basic list:

• Clothing: Technical workout gear / running gear (1 long pants, 1 capris, 2-3 quick dry tees, 1 long-sleeve half-zip pullover)
• Also, probably one pair of lightweight loose Indian-style pants and a long sleeve loose cotton blouse, for hot countries and/or more conservative places.

Teams are not allowed to bring any of their own money or credit cards, possessing language books, guides, maps, GPS units, cellphones, cameras, or similar aides prior to the start of The Amazing Race. Teams may purchase aides using their stipend or borrow cellphones from locals during The Amazing Race.
