Because of their slow metabolisms, snakes remain conscious and able to feel pain and fear long after they are decapitated.

Snakes need lots of bones so that they can be both strong and flexible. They have a special skull (more on this later!) and they have a very long spine, made up of hundreds of vertebrae (the bones that make up our backbone). They also have hundreds of ribs, almost the whole way down their body, to protect their organs.

All snakes are vertebrates, meaning they have an interior skeleton with a backbone, so there are no snakes without bones. Bones are the reason why snakes can slither, move around, and attack prey, so they would not be able to eat, move, or function at all without their bones.

In case you were wondering (cause they are soooo flexible), snakes actually do have bones. Animals with bones are know as vertebrates — snakes are vertebrates. A snake’s backbone is made up of many vertebrae attached to ribs.

Inside a snake. With no arms or legs, a snake has a simple skeleton. The skull is connected to a long, flexible spine (or backbone), with hundreds of ribs running down to the base of the tail. This allows the snake to bend and curl its body as it pushes against the ground to move along.

In snakes, the lower bones of the jaw, or mandibles, are not connected like they are in mammals. At the front, each mandible is attached by a stretchy ligament. This is how the snake can open its mouth wider than its body. The mandibles move independently of each other, slowly inching the prey into the throat.

Snakes do have lungs. The right lung has small pockets inside which fill up with air as the snake inhales. Oxygen from the air then passes into the snake’s bloodstream. Waste chemicals such as carbon dioxide are expelled from the snake’s respiratory system as it exhales.

Can anacondas eat humans? Anacondas have a legendary status as “man eaters.” There have been reports of humans being eaten by anacondas, though none have been verified. The scientific consensus is, however, that an anaconda could eat a human. They eat prey that is tougher and stronger than humans, according to Rivas.

Anacondas get all the press about being the biggest snakes in the world because they are in terms of weight (see below). But the longest documented living snake is a reticulated python named Medusa, who resides at The Edge of Hell Haunted House in Kansas City. Medusa is 25 feet, 2 inches long and weighs 350 pounds.

Medusa is currently housed at “The Edge of Hell Haunted House” in Kansas City. Her handlers say she can actually tell when it’s “showtime” for patrons, as she will go into what they call performance mode.

In fact, there are well documented reports of king cobras feeding on the reticulated python in Southeast Asia. It is no doubt that king cobras do occasionally consume large prey such as monitor lizards or even pythons.

Large groups of piranhas may gang up on an older, weaker anaconda near the end of its life. Caimans, which are smaller members of the alligator family may also prey on smaller or weaker anacondas, although, when the anaconda is full grown, it is known to prey on the caiman.

The king cobra attempted to bite a bit more than it could swallow, given the enormous size of the adult python, and the python, in turn, did exactly what pythons do: It coiled up around and strangled its attacker. Unfortunately, in the end, the python’s power was no match for the cobra’s venom.
