Iditarod sled dog puppies are beaten with whips, shovels, tree branches or anything else that’s within easy reach. Mushers beat their dogs with quirt whips. The whip has two tails at the end, and a core that’s normally filled with lead shot. Mushers roll up their whips and hide them in their pockets.

DON’T GET IN THE WAY OF THE FLYING POO When learning to run in teams, the sled dogs very quickly learn how to use the bathroom when they run so as not to reduce the tempo of the sled. Typically, they will move to the outer side of the pack and do their business. Just be a little wary when the dogs are running downhill.

Along with frequent feeding, the dogs are hydrated along the trail with a type of soup to which meat has been added. This ensures that they receive adequate fluids as well. Some dogs will also bite snow as they run along the trail for hydration. Most mushers run and rest the same amount of time.

As a working dog, the husky needs a job and enough activity to be happy. This is why huskies like pulling sleds and mushing are humane. If one can not exercise in front of the sled, husky owners have to get creative and offer alternatives.

Pulling a sled is what they love doing. Check the tails and ears of the dogs that says a lot about how they feel. Tails wagging and pointing up ears pointing up means a happy dog (mostly).

A Siberian Husky will be able to pull the weight of half an average-sized human. So, it will take at least two Huskies to pull one person. To pull a sled with one person you would be looking at least 4 Huskies but of course, the heavier the sled and people within it, the more Huskies will be required.

Sled dogs were used until 1992, when they were banned from Antarctica by the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty over concerns that the dogs might transfer diseases such as canine distemper to the seal population. The dogs were used to working on snow, not on ice, in much milder temperatures.

But, many people do not know that sled dogs are no longer allowed on the continent. Back in the 1980’s the Environmental Protocol (conservation of Antarctic plants and animals) called for all non-native species, except humans, to be removed from Antarctica.

The polar regions have special navigation concerns in the form of the magnetic fields which permeate them. These can make it difficult for planes to navigate because the polar areas interfere with magnetic navigational tools.

The body will still decompose. In the dry freezing Antarctic climate, you will get better preservation by simply leaving the body out in the open. Perfect examples are the bodies of climbers who have died on Mount Everest[1].
