A portable dishwasher works as well as a full-sized dishwasher, but may have capacity limitations. You may only be able to wash six or eight place settings, opposed to 12. In addition, you likely won’t be able to wash bulky items like plates, strainers, and cookware.

With most units they just won’t fit. Portable dishwashers, on the other hand, can wash just as much as a built-in dishwasher. Handwashing uses up to 27 gallons of water, so any dishwasher is better than suffering through washing dishes in the sink. It once again comes back to how many dishes you can wash.

How to Hook Up Portable Dishwashers

1. Loosen the aerator from the spout of the kitchen sink.
2. Screw the special faucet adapter that was included with your portable dishwasher onto the threaded faucet spout.
3. Turn on the hot water at the kitchen faucet, and allow the water to run until it is hot to the touch.

Any portable dishwasher can be connected permanently to a water source and drain. Some can be permanently installed as an undercounter dishwasher, depending on whether the unit is a top-loading or front-loading unit and where the controls are located – top, front or side.

Portable Dishwasher Air Gap/Drainage Hose Lift up the cap, and dig out any debris inside the air gap. The drainage hose captures water moving out of the tub and takes it to the household drain. Use a plastic spoon to clean out the drainage hose if it’s dirty. See if the hose is kinked, and straighten it.

Generally, these dishwashers use a quick connect adapter that connect to a standard sink faucet for water intake. They have a drain hose in the back of the unit that allows for drainage to run directly into a sink.

A defective water inlet valve may be preventing the dishwasher from getting water. Most often, the water inlet valve is the main reason why a dishwasher is not getting water. If you’re comfortable inspecting the water inlet valve, unplug the dishwasher and disconnect the water supply before starting.

This is often caused by a blocked drain or a faulty drain pump, and you may find water leaks under the machine. Error code E5 with the check water light flashing is a sign that the dishwasher has overfilled with water. This may need the float switch or water inlet valve assembly to be repaired or replaced.

Signs that point to an inlet valve problem include leaks that fill the dishwasher when not running, the dishwasher filling too slowly when in use, or the dishwasher not filling at all. Leaks that end up outside of the dishwasher also can indicate an inlet valve problem, and this must be addressed immediately.

Although dishwashers are watertight, they don’t actually fill with water. Just a small basin at the bottom fills up. There, heating elements heat the water to 130 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Then a pump propels the water up to the water jets, where it is forced out and sprayed against the dirty dishes.

Some water (standing water), usually one to two cups, remaining in the bottom of the tub is normal. Without a high drain loop or air gap, dirty water from the sink can flow into the dishwasher. The dishwasher drain hose should be connected to the house drain either directly or through an air gap.

Answer: The most common reason a dishwasher has water coming into it when off is: The dishwasher drain hose is laying flat under the kitchen sink and therefore letting the drain water back into the dishwasher. This is to not allow the water from the sink to get into the dishwasher. This valve may be faulty.

The most common cause of dishwasher smells is a clogged drain filter. If your dishwasher has one, it’s probably located on the bottom rear of the tub. Remove the filter and clean it in your kitchen sink with hot soapy water, using a bottle brush to reach all the crevices.
