What predators do cygnets and swans have? New born cygnets are mainly lost to crows, herons, magpies, turtles, pike and large perch. Both cygnets and full-grown swans are also the prey of foxes and mink.

While ducklings are routinely preyed upon, even fully grown waterfowl are preyed upon by these predatory fish on occasion.

Muskies can consume waterfowl (adult & young) as part of their regular diet. Ducklings can be a common food source for muskies. Muskies will eat a duckling when the opportunity presents itself. Young ducklings, in fact, have been observed being snatched up by muskies, northern pike, bass, and even large catfish.

Pike are aggressive if not given enough space because they are territorial. They use a form of foraging known as ambush foraging. Unlike species such as perch, pike undergo bursts of energy instead of actively chasing down prey. As such, a fair amount of inactive time occurs until they find prey.

Contrary to popular belief, northern pike are actually a deliciously tasty fish if done right. They are chock full of bones; however, with a little care and know how, one is able to fillet a pike such that there won’t be a bone to be found. See the video for tips on how I like to clean pike.

However, there is no evidence of an attack on people by the Alligator Gars. Eggs are poisonous, causing illness by humans. Alligator Gars may not win a beauty contest any time soon, but they can win the popularity contest by killing off the aggressive Asian carp.

While a few reports have implicated Northern pike in attacks on swimmers, these fish really pose no danger to humans (unless you get your fingers caught in their mouths). The story is different for the small fish they prey upon. These fish have been known to hunt in packs, similar to wolves.
