If you go to myspace.com, you’ll see that it is very much still alive, though it has mostly transitioned away from social networking to become a curated music and entertainment site. As of 2019, the site boasted over 7 million monthly visits.

It’s 2019 and MySpace is newsworthy again. “As a result of a server migration project, any photos, videos, and audio files you uploaded more than three years ago, may no longer be available on or from MySpace,” read a since-removed announcement on the website.

In June 2011, Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake jointly purchased the company for approximately $35 million….Myspace.

Thomas Anderson (born November 8, 1970) is an American technology entrepreneur and co-founder of the social networking website Myspace, which he founded in 2003 with Chris DeWolfe. He was later president of Myspace and a strategic adviser for the company.

When it sold the site last June, to an advertising network owner called Specific Media, it was for a mere $35 million. In between those two events, another social network went from a few million users to more than 750 million. That network, of course, was Facebook, and, for all practical purposes, it killed MySpace.

While Facebook’s deflation may take longer than others due to its massive size — and, like Myspace, it will certainly continue to exist for decades in some form — it’s safe to say that its best days are in the past. Because it’s only a matter of time before the network effect breaks down.

MySpace, Facebook’s one-time rival, has a new home. The fallen tech star is now owned by Time Inc, which acquired the company almost by accident after buying ad tech firm Viant.
