Page numbers are required for in-text citations when quoting, and recommended when paraphrasing: For in-text citations, the page number always appears in brackets at the end of the sentence where you used the citation. If the source has no page number, use the paragraph number or section heading instead.

When to include page numbers You should include the page number in the in-text citation when directly quoting the exact wording of a source. Short direct quotes are enclosed within quotation marks. Note: in-text citations go after the full stop.

If you do need to include page numbers, the page number will go at the end of the in-text citation. To create the in-text citation, you will need this information: Author Surname. Publication Year.

In Harvard style, when you quote directly from a source that includes page numbers, your in-text citation must include a page number. For example: (Smith, 2014, p. 33). You can also include page numbers to point the reader towards a passage that you paraphrased.

In-text references should include page number details (if available) if you are paraphrasing or quoting. Page numbers are not required if referencing an entire work, e.g. (Milligan 1985). If page numbers are not provided or possible, then author name and year of publication are sufficient.
