How do wetness indicators work? Overall, a wetness indicator changes when a diaper is wet. In general, a wetness indicator reacts to moisture changing the line (or indicator) from yellow to blue. Moisture, not necessarily urine.

When the diaper reached its leaking point in a vertical position, Pampers absorbed an average of 83 mL before leaking and Huggies absorbed an average of 130.5 mL. This shows Huggies absorbed 48 mL more of 5% salt water than Pampers.

Hydrogels are man-made substances that absorb water and hold it in the form of a gel. The hydrogel most commonly used in diapers is sodium polyacrylate. It’s added to the core of disposable diapers to soak up urine and keep moisture away from a baby’s skin, helping to prevent diaper rash.

Pampers disposable diapers use non wovens made of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PET) fibers, wood pulp and super-absorbent gel for their diapers’ core.

Compost and recycling The industry is in its infancy in Canada, but the City of Toronto has been turning parts of disposable diapers into compost since 2002.

Compostable diapers only break down if they’re actively composted. If you toss them into your trash bin, they’ll go straight to the landfill and won’t readily break down. While many municipalities collect waste specifically for composting, diapers are rarely accepted.

Each company’s diapers are filled with a different combination of fibers and they are all uniquely set up to compost their own fibers, but any regular or overnight disposable diaper can be composted like we’ve described here. It’s just a matter of whether you want to do it yourself or have someone do it for you.

If you don’t have a composting facility nearby, you can sign up for REDYPER through TerraCycle, which is a service that will pick up your used diapers and compost them the right way.

In general, diapers marketed as biodegradable (or compostable) tend to use more sustainable materials and production methods than regular diapers, making them a bit more eco-friendly. But if they are not actually sent to a composting facility, then their impact is only very slightly better than regular diapers.
