Marbled Hatchetfish are egg layers. They are not bred on a commercial basis, but they have been bred in captivity. In the aquarium, breeding can be somewhat difficult, but they can be encouraged to spawn under the right conditions. The water must be soft and slightly acidic, and they must be fed a proper diet.

Hatchetfish are shoaling fish, which means they like to be kept in a group of 10 or more.

Breeding. Silver Hatchetfish deposit their eggs on floating plants, but beyond that, not much is known about their breeding habits. There have been some reports that soft water with a lower pH and a diet rich in insects encourage spawning.

The best way is to keep them in suitable numbers. It’s a shame to see group deals of three fish at a time in retailers when hatchets should typically roam at much greater densities. As a bare minimum, keep groups of no less than six. Although they don’t fly after them, hatchetfish just love insects.

The Common Hatchetfish are generally good community fish. This fish is relatively shy, so it should be spared the company of hostile tankmates. It must absolutely be kept in a school. Temperament: Peaceful – These fish are very nervous and timid, so monitor interactions with tankmates.

The river hatchetfish is a schooling species best kept in groups of five or more that spends most of its time in the top-level of the water where it searches for food. These fish are peaceful towards other fishes, but frequently bicker among themselves.

A carnivore, the Silver Hatchet will eat floating foods such as freeze dried bloodworms and tubifex, high quality flake food, mosquito larvae, small flies, and some other meaty live or frozen foods.

Found in tropical, subtropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans, marine hatchetfishes range in size from Polyipnus danae at 2.8 cm (1.1 in) to the c. 12 cm (4.7 in)-long giant hatchetfish (Argyropelecus gigas).

Animals that live in the twilight zone must be able to survive cold temperatures, an increase in water pressure and dark waters. There are no plants in this zone, because there is not enough light for photosynthesis. Octopus, squid, and the hatchet fish are some of the animals that can be found in this zone.

Worldwide distribution in temperate and tropical oceans from the 40° northern latitude to the 40° southern latitude. Known to be a resident of the midnight and abyssal zones, tripod fish inhabit the deep ocean floor at depths ranging from about 900 to 4,700 m (2,950 to 15,400 ft).

Experts believe that tripod fish can survive from one to couple of years.

And the answer is a yes! There are around sixty-four species of flying fish, and they really do fly. Then the airborne fish spreads its long, wing‑like pectoral fins and tilts them upward, similar to a bird. Wind passing under and over the wings creates lift, which sends the fish gliding through the air.

Flying fish are especially abundant in the Caribbean Sea. Barbados was known as the “The land of flying fish” in the past. Flying fish are often hunted by fisherman. Luckily their number in the wild is still stable and they are not listed as endangered species.

Flying fish lay eggs in the same hyponeuston zone that the adults occupy. An example is the Atlantic flying fish (Cypselurus melanurus) that lays its eggs among sargassum clumps. The eggs have many tiny strings on their surface that wrap around the parts of the sargassum, as well as one another.
