It’s true; fish do attack. Some of them are even capable of killing you. Yes, a fish can bite you. Until these recent reports began to pop up around the world, we didn’t know that some fish may go out of their way to bite humans.

Fish and other marine animals can bite and cause cuts, scrapes, and punctures. Bites or puncture wounds to the hand, wrist, foot, or joint are very dangerous and require immediate medical attention. Ocean bacteria are particularly dangerous. Infections often occur.

Pike do not shed all their teeth during winter and they do not bite humans, but they can certainly hurt and injure a fisherman’s hand. Regardless of where you fish, late May and early June is a prime time to target big pike. The majority of pike will spawn around the full moon cycle in April whether under ice or open water. By mid-May the spawn is over and the big fish look to regain all the weight they lost during the spawn process.

When is a pike or muskie leader not necessary? The quick answer is that a leader isn’t necessary in most crankbait trolling situations. Usually when trolling with crankbaits, pike and muskie are lip hooked.

Fluorocarbon is more abrasion resistant than monofilament and braids, so it has a better chance in contact with razor pike teeth. Many times at first ice I fish for pike and walleyes in the same areas, instead of just pike or just walleyes. If I target only walleyes I usually use 8-pound fluorocarbon leader.

Leader is usually thicker and stronger than your main line. The length of leader will vary depending on what you’re doing. When throwing lures, you want a shorter leader so it doesn’t impede you from casting far (1-2ft). When using live bait, the decision is up to you.

Leader lines are a great way to solve problems that anglers can face when fishing. These rocks can be very sharp if the fishing is rubbing against it and a high potential for getting snagged on a rock. Codfish can also have very sharp teeth that can chew through the fishing line.

The simple answer is that yes, you can use fluorocarbon line as your leader material and it’s what I use 90% of the time. Also, regular fluorocarbon is just as abrasion-resistant as fluorocarbon leaders and is much cheaper.

A leader line is a line that establishes a connection between a graphical representation of an item and some text. A leader points to a bit of our drawing and says: ‘Oi – Look Here’ and ‘Read This! ‘. The leader line itself should be a continuous Thin line (see this post on Linetype Definitions).

If you are using a leader so should you snag something big, you can get your line back then you want to use 6-8 feet and really need no more than 2 feet.

Learn the knot to apply a fluorocarbon or mono leader and gain confidence in it. The technique where I’ve been most pleasantly surprised is when I’m flipping with braid/fluorocarbon. My typical leader length is 2 to 4 feet. Of course, you will need to make some adjustments in your tackle.
