Power and responsibilities As a DM, an IAS officer is also the head of the police department as well as other departments. As per a protocol if the IPS goes to the meeting with the IAS then they will have to salute the IAS. In this system the police officers have more rights but still less than an IAS.

In case a probationer fails in the final exam by not scoring the minimum required marks, he/she may be allowed to take a special exam in the subjects that he/she failed. But the marks awarded in this exam will not determine the seniority.
