Human remains found in the wreck of the Costa Concordia are believed to be the last victim of the cruise ship’s 2012 capsize, Italian officials have said. They believe it is Indian waiter Russel Rebello, the last of 32 victims to be recovered from the wreck.

On Friday morning we finally saw them, those wretched refugees of the Carnival Triumph, after five days stranded at sea.

While at sea with over 4,200 passengers in February 2013, the ship lost power due to a fire in the engine room, leaving the ship adrift off the coast of Mexico. Passengers later reported sewage backing up onto the floors, leading the media to dub the voyage “the poop cruise.”

The Grand Celebration has since been retired for scrap in 2020 along with her remaining sister ship the Magellan (formerly Holiday) and other ships that were also retired due the economic losses from cruise operations being suspended worldwide following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Farewell to Carnival Triumph No more will the Carnival Triumph be seen sailing at sea as the cruise ship has completed its final voyage under that name. The ship will be completed at the end of April with the new name of Carnival Sunrise.

Cruise ships do have jails. Called the brig, they are rarely used, but when they are, it is generally for those passengers who commit serious crimes where criminal prosecution is likely, such as drug trafficking. Most guests on a cruise ship will never see the brig or have reason to visit.

The easiest way for ships to do this is to liquefy the leftover food in an industrial grinder. The food is blended with water until it’s a smooth mixture and then either disposed of in port, incinerated, or pumped out to sea when the ship is deep water and away from the coastlines.

Most cruise ships remain idled in open waters or in ports across the globe as sailings continue to be postponed or canceled. In Europe, some of the smaller cruise lines are planning to restart operations later this month.

If engine failure means the ship will not be able to get to its final port on its own, this likely means your cruise will be canceled, and the ship will be required to limp — or be towed — to the nearest port for urgent repair work.

Cruises on both ships are now cancelled up to and including Dec. 16, 2021.

Along with more existing cruise ships sailing in 2022, there are a number of brand new cruise ships scheduled to set sail. Some of these amazing and innovative ships include Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, as well as Celebrity Apex, Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, and Enchanted Princess.

In fact, Carnival’s Costa Allegra caught fire in the Indian Ocean in February 2012 because fuel leaked onto a hot spot and ignited. That fire left the ship without power for three days in tropical heat of nearly 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

An engine fire on February 10 left the ship and its 4,000 passengers without power and with scarce food. While people onboard reported toilets that wouldn’t work, the ship was restocked with food during the days it was being towed through the Gulf of Mexico.

Carnival’s court filing says the “ticket contract makes absolutely no guarantee for safe passage, a seaworthy vessel, adequate and wholesome food, and sanitary and safe living conditions.” Since the Triumph fire, Carnival says it has instituted a 110% money-back “Great Vacation Guarantee” on its cruises.
