But we shouldn’t forget that the existing robot, Curiosity, is still there and working well following its landing in equatorial Gale Crater back in 2012. Curiosity celebrates 3,000 Martian days, or Sols, on the surface of the Red Planet on Tuesday.

As Perseverance enters the Martian atmosphere inside its protective aeroshell, the rover will switch between several of its onboard antennas to stay in contact with Earth. Some of these antennas use powerful X-band transmissions that can send small amounts of data directly to the DSN.

The ones that are operational are 5 and these are Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance. A Mars rover can be considered as a motor vehicle that travels across the surface of the planet Mars upon arrival. Rovers have several advantages over stationary landers.

Opportunity

NASA’s Martian Exploration Rover, Spirit, could not pull itself from its sandy resting place on Mars and has been downgraded to an operational science station. While Spirit will continue to record scientific observations and snap photos, Spirit the Rover is no more.

Both Spirit and Opportunity kept roving long after their warranties expired. Spirit finally got bogged down in a sand trap in early 2010. As a result, the rover couldn’t reorient itself to catch the sun during the approaching Martian winter and essentially froze to death.
