It has been theorized that domestication saved the species. Thus, some time after 8000 BCE, the approximate date of extinction in the Americas, humans in Eurasia may have begun to keep horses as a livestock food source, and by keeping them in captivity, may have helped to preserve the species.

New genetic research has revealed that the world’s wild horses went extinct hundreds, if not thousands, of years ago. Scientists found that an assumed wild breed, native to Mongolia, were actually domesticated horses.

Wild horses are found in California, Oregon, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Arizona and Texas. Nevada is home to more than half of the wild horse populations in North America. Oregon’s wild horse populations increase 20 percent every year and are appreciated for their high quality and color.

Is It Legal to Catch a Wild Horse? In most cases, it is not legal to catch a wild horse. Doing so requires specific permission from the landowner on which the wild horses roam. For mustangs on Federal land, the Bureau of Land Management typically handles the gathering and removal of excess wild horses.

In the old days and today, horses are commonly euthanized after breaking their legs because they have a small chance of successful recovery. Their legs must absorb considerable shock as their powerful bodies gallop at high speeds.

Horses, whilst they do recognise and force some sort of relationship with owners, have a much more herd-like mentality to their relationships. This is not to say that there are no bonds between humans and horses, as explored above, but it appears that dogs are able to form a closer attachment than horses do.
