The ancient Greeks would call her by her proper name more willingly. They rarely even ventured to call Hades by his proper name. Of the two, Persephone was seen as the less dangerous one. One of the few who could calm Hades if he was angered by someone, and fed his better nature.

Minthe was dazzled by Hades and made an attempt to seduce him, but Persephone intervened and metamorphosed Minthe, in the words of Strabo’s account, “into the garden mint, which some call hedyosmon (lit. ‘sweet-smelling’)”.

In the Underworld, Persephone had grown to love Hades, who treated her with compassion and loved her as his Queen. As she would have up in Olympus, she remained eternally beautiful in the Underworld. Hades admired her kind and nurturing nature.
