There were multiple reports of damage to homes on Elvis Presley Drive, just down the street from the home where the famed singer was born. But just down the street on Elvis Presley Drive, a tornado tore the roof off the home of Terrille and Chaquilla Pulliam, they told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.

An estimated F5 tornado cut a path 400 yards wide through the residential section of Tupelo, Mississippi. At least 216 people were killed, and 700 were injured. The tornado had a 15-mile long path and did $3 million in damage.

TUPELO, Miss. — A tornado struck Tupelo, Mississippi, late Sunday as storms swept through the area, officials said. According to WHBQ-TV, a large tornado was reported about 9 p.m. local time near Houlka in northwestern Chickasaw County.

With this said, the typical tornado damage path is about one or two miles, with a width of around 50 yards. The largest tornado path widths can exceed one mile, while the smallest widths can be less than 10 yards. Widths can even vary considerably during a single tornado, since its size can change during its lifetime.

In 1936, young Elvis Presley was only 15 months old when he survived a tornado in his hometown of Tupelo, Mississippi. The tornado killed 216 people and at the time was one of the deadliest tornadoes to ever hit the US.

Tupelo leaders report extensive damage, but no injuries from Sunday storm. The tornado tore off part of the roof on Terrille and Chaquilla Pulliam’s home at 1818 Elvis Presley Drive.

Photos and videos show the devastation left behind by a “large and extremely dangerous” tornado in Tupelo, Mississippi, late Sunday night. “At 9:52 p.m. CDT, a confirmed large and destructive tornado was observed over Tupelo, moving northeast at 45 mph.

The Tupelo tornado, rated an EFI by NWS survey crews, was on the ground for 12.8 miles and had estimated peak winds of 100 mph. Local law enforcement reported extensive residential damage around the Elvis Presley Museum Area in Tupelo, along with downed trees and power lines. Tupelo is the birthplace of Elvis Presley.

Missouri – Matt Suter was 19 years old when he had an experience that he will never forget. He survived after being swept up inside a tornado. More than a dozen tornadoes spawned from the supercell thunderstorms that day, claiming the lives of two people. But Matt was lucky.

Before a tornado strikes, the wind may die down and the air may become very still. A loud roar similar to a freight train may be heard. An approaching cloud of debris, even if a funnel is not visible.

Mississippi sees average of 35.8 tornadoes yearly.

At 7:06 p.m. on April 27 (0006 UTC on April 28), a weak tornado touched down in extreme western Pulaski County, Arkansas, roughly 6 miles (9.7 km) east of Paron, and tracked north-northeast. Within a minute, the tornado dramatically intensified and struck a small residential area at EF3 intensity.

Moving through an unpopulated area, the tornado intensified before crossing the Arkansas River and entering Faulkner County around 7:26 p.m. (0026 UTC). The tornado entered Faulkner County and immediately struck the River Plantation subdivision at the southwest edge of Mayflower.

It caused minor damage to homes and downed trees as it neared U.S. Highway 69A. Shortly thereafter, it struck the town of Quapaw at high-end EF2 strength and caused extensive damage. The local fire station was largely destroyed, and some industrial buildings sustained heavy damage.

The tornado then caused mainly EF2 damage as it struck areas in and around Saltillo. Numerous homes, mobile homes, sheds, barns, trees, and a church were damaged or destroyed in the Saltillo area. Two homes near Saltillo had only interior walls left standing, with the damage to those homes rated EF3.
