Some tips: South Padre Island IS the best of the two. It has better beaches, better accomodations, better restuarants and, in my opinion, friendlier people. However, I love both towns! Corpus is closer to the major cities and more things to do, but SPI….it’s just in the smack middle of nowhere.

As one of Texas’ most beloved Gulf Coast cities, there are plenty of beautiful beaches in Corpus Christi to enjoy. There are so many great spots near the bay that can entertain a variety of interests. Some places have horseback riding, some are secluded and private, some are great for families.

Anywhere North of Corpus Christi is going to be brown water and beaches that are just OK. Old saying “Beaches are nice until you go to a real beach”. They can be fun, certainly, but if you want blue water, you won’t get it.

South Padre Island

Port Aransas is a good beach destination from San Antonio. Just over 2 hours by car. Galveston is about 4 hours. There are more things to see and do in Galveston but the water and beaches in Port A are nicer.

Originally Answered: Why is Galveston water dirty? It is caused by the silt washing down the Mississippi that gets pushed by Gulf currents along the shoreline to Galveston. You see the same phenomenon along the Western shoreline of Long Island Sound.
