It is possible to ignite a pool of gasoline using only a cigarette. Gas ignites between 500 °F and 540 °F, the cigarette at its hottest was between 450 °F and 500 °F but only when it was actually being smoked. An ignition is very improbable.

Cigarettes burn at around 700C (1,292F) and the ignition temperature of petrol is 246C. “But it just isn’t that simple,” he said. They even used a vacuum device to produce the higher temperature (900-950C) of a cigarette being sucked. In more than 2,000 attempts the petrol did not ignite.

There are conditions where a burning cigarette will ignite spilled gasoline or gasoline vapors. A puffed cigarette’s tip temperature will exceed the 500F autoignition temperature of gasoline. You can see the color change to brighter red which means a higher temperature when puffing.

It turns out the No Smoking signs you see at a gas pump are there for a good reason. The real danger of smoking at a gas station isn’t oil spills or anything else that you can see, but a hazard entirely invisible to the human eye: gasoline vapors.

Even the vapors can be ignited if enough of them form in a confined space and you introduce flame, embers, sparks etc. So, smoking around a gas pump is very dangerous, not only will your ass be on fire, you can potentially set the whole gas station on fire very quickly, and everyone around you when it all explodes.

Any person who smokes or uses an open flame within 20 feet of a pump used to fuel motor vehicles or a fueling tanker being used to deliver gasoline to a gasoline station is guilty of a Class 3 misdemeanor if smoking or the use of an open flame is prohibited by a sign at the pump.

The laboratory trials found cigarette butts ignited the hay in 33% of cases. The wind draught created by a line of passing traffic was also recorded and found to be sufficient to increase the potential for a cigarette butt to start a fire on the roadside even if the prevailing conditions were calm.

What began with a discarded cigarette is soon a growing fire. It can happen as quickly as 20 minutes, or maybe 18 hours.

Many people don’t realize the length of time required for ashes to cool enough for disposal. Even after several days ashes can retain enough heat to reignite and start a fire.
