Earthquakes, the usual cause of tsunamis, cannot be predicted in time, but can be predicted in space. Therefore, tsunami prediction can only be done after an earthquake has occurred.

A prediction is a statement that we make about the future. When a person makes a prediction they say what they think will happen in the future.

Observational data collected by doppler radar, radiosondes, weather satellites, buoys and other instruments are fed into computerized NWS numerical forecast models. The models use equations, along with new and past weather data, to provide forecast guidance to our meteorologists.
