Swapping from first-person to third is probably the most common that you’ll see, but it’s not unheard of to throw a couple of second-person elements into your first-person story. In general, you won’t see many people going away from third-person into something else.

They, them, he and she are personal pronouns. We use pronouns in everyday language. It helps us talk about ourselves, other people and things. Sometimes pronouns, like she and her, are specific to girls, and other pronouns like he and his are specific to boys.

First, Second, and Third Person Pronouns

The second-person point of view is rarely used in fiction because it can be very difficult to do well. Many writers have found that it can be hard to develop a set of characters and a story in which the second person is appropriate. That’s why it’s not very common for novels to use the second-person point of view.

Third Person Omniscient This is writing from the perspective of a narrator, hovering outside the story. The narrator knows everything, but the characters don’t. It’s kind of like God is narrating, or a fly on the wall.

While first-person writing offers intimacy and immediacy between narrator and reader, third-person narration offers the potential for both objectivity and omniscience. This effectively makes both forms of narration appealing to both first-time and seasoned writers.

A first-person narrator gives the reader a front row seat to the story. It also: Gives a story credibility. First-person point of view builds a rapport with readers by sharing a personal story directly with them.

The advantage of third person is that the author can write from a broader perspective. The disadvantage is that it can be difficult to establish connection with the reader. Third Person Limited – This point of view is limited to one character. The narrator only experiences what this one character experiences.

If you want your reader to feel high identification with your POV character, choose first person or close third. If you want to describe your character from the outside as well as give her thoughts, choose either close or distant third person.
