Requirements for Honor Societies Some students may be invited to join more than one honor society. It’s important to understand that you don’t have to pick just one. Keep in mind that costs associated can add up and, in some cases, the time obligations of involvement might be more than you’re willing to take on.

The four basic requirements for membership are scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Students are eligible to apply for NHS membership if they demonstrate academic achievement by achieving a 3.65 or higher. Grade point average will not be rounded to meet the minimum requirement.

These honors and distinctions might include academic honors, sports awards, placing in musical competitions, and/or awards in photography or debate contests.

Honor Society membership is a nationally recognized designation with exclusive privileges valued at much more than membership dues ensuring that members get their money’s worth. Membership dues are necessary in order to keep partner licenses active beyond the six month term. Membership is by invitation only.

Are Honor Societies Really Worth It? Honor societies often include many social events for networking, which can be beneficial for the future. Honor societies of course come with no guarantees, and unfortunately are sometimes a scam. Those that join these societies can get as much as they put into it.

Phi Beta Kappa

It’s supposed to “set you apart” on resumes and college applications, but in reality puts you in a very large group of other students. This is not to say NHS is a scam or not worth it, but don’t fool yourself: it’s not a huge honor.

A student cannot be dismissed from NHS without a Faculty Council review. Students who fail to complete required service projects will receive a written probationary warning at the end of the school year. Any in-school suspension or out-of-school suspension will result in a review for dismissal by the Faculty Council.

When a student has his/her membership revoked, any privileges that go with the membership are also lost. This means that the student can not use NHS as an activity or honor on any college or scholarship applications.

Your college is unlikely to find out unless your school notifies them, which they would be within their rights to do. Most schools would not do this for the reason you were dismissed, but if it was due to some huge ethical lapse that would be more likely.

Colleges look at your application from multiple angles. To evaluate your character, the majority of admission officers look for participation in community service opportunities. Take advantage of service opportunities by supporting a cause in your community that you care about.

The NJHS is a student group that was established in 1929 in order to help recognize and promote student achievement in the areas of scholarship, character, service, citizenship and leadership. (It is actually part of the National Honor Society – or NHS – but with a specific emphasis on the middle level grades.)

NJHS membership is an outstanding opportunity to develop the habits and standards so important to success in high school, college, and a career. Think of it as making yourself #futuready.

Ninth grade students in a traditional 9-12 high school are not eligible for NJHS membership. Per national guidelines, at a minimum, students must have a cumulative GPA of 85, B, 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent standard of excellence. (Each school chapter is allowed to require a higher cumulative GPA.)

Being in the National Honor Society is not going to help you stand out in Ivy League admissions. So don’t get so excited about being in the National Honor Society. Colleges don’t care about meaningless honors. They care about passion, intellectual curiosity, perseverance, determination, hard work, and talent.

The NHS isn’t the most exclusive club, but it is very well-respected and speaks to a student’s academic success, community involvement, leadership skills, and overall high character. The more active role a student takes in the National Honor Society, the more benefits they’ll reap from their involvement in it.

Is a 2.7 GPA Good? A 2.7 GPA is noticeably lower than a 3.0 GPA, which is the national average. It’s almost decent, but still a little low. Luckily, a 2.7 is certainly a GPA that can be pulled up to a solid number.

High school seniors who are active National Honor Society (NHS) members in good standing of an affiliated NHS chapter are eligible to apply for the scholarship. There are no limits to the number of applications per chapter. After verification, members use their login to access the NHS Scholarship application.

Many graduate schools take your entire application into account. In that case it means that a 2.7 GPA can be considered a good GPA.

Yes. It might be harder to get a job for some majors, because some employers have GPA cutoffs for applicants. It’s going to be a lot harder to get a finance job if you have a 2.7 GPA, but if you were an engineering major with a 2.7 GPA, it’ll barely make a difference.

Although some employers insist on a GPA of at least 3.0 and some benchmark it at 3.5, others don’t have hard-and-fast rules. A candidate with a GPA of 3.2 may get selected ahead of one with 3.9 if the former had to put herself through college and served as the class treasurer, for example.

Employers care most about your GPA when you are applying for your first job out of school, whether you are a recent college graduate or a recent high school graduate who is directly entering the job market.

A: Some elite employers have policies requiring a certain GPA (usually a 3.0 or higher), and there is generally no way around that rule. In some cases you can squeak through by demonstrating that you’ve achieved better grades in your particular major or in classes related to the job to which you’re applying.
