When can you get an epidural? Typically, you can receive an epidural as early as when you are 4 to 5 centimeters dilated and in active labor. Normally, it takes about 15 minutes to place the epidural catheter and for the pain to start subsiding and another 20 minutes to go into full effect.

How long is full term? Pregnancy lasts for about 280 days or 40 weeks. A preterm or premature baby is delivered before 37 weeks of your pregnancy. Extremely preterm infants are born 23 through 28 weeks.

It varies widely from woman to woman and even from pregnancy to pregnancy. Women experience labor pain differently — for some, it resembles menstrual cramps; for others, severe pressure; and for others, extremely strong waves that feel like diarrheal cramps.

Sources of Pain During Labor Sure, the baby is moving around and pressing down to help the cervix open. Your hips spreading and other body parts getting out of the way for the baby. These are all sources of potential pain in labor. Though not everyone will experience this type of pain in their labor.

Most women are able to use the bathroom during labor — to urinate and to have a bowel movement. Your health care provider will probably encourage you to do so because it’s possible that a full bladder might slow down your baby’s descent.

It’s a normal bodily function, and while in labor, your stress, hormones and contractions irritate your bowels and make you gassy.

While women feel embarrassed about pooping during labor, it’s totally natural. And, it might even be healthier for both mom and baby. “If women poop during the delivery they are using the right muscles,” said Dr. Christine Greves, a doctor at the Center for Obstetrics and Gynecology at Orland Health.

Stool softeners work by adding moisture to the stool to soften it and make it easier to pass. A stimulant laxative, on the other hand, forces your intestines to contract and gives you the urge to poop. The stool softener is not for long-term use; it is to get you through the initial slow-down after birth.

Most new mothers will have a bowel movement within two to three days after giving birth.

The Healing Process

• Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily.
• Expect vaginal discharge.
• Avoid stairs and lifting until your doctor says these activities are OK.
• Don’t take a bath or go swimming until the doctor says it’s OK.
• Don’t drive until your doctor says it’s OK.
• If the incision becomes red or swollen, call your doctor.

After delivery, the doctor or midwife usually closes the perineal tear with stitches. The stitches will dissolve in 1 to 2 weeks, so they will not need to be removed. You may notice pieces of the stitches on your sanitary pad or on the toilet paper when you go to the washroom.

Bathing – Please refrain from baths for at least three days following your delivery. DO NOT use any bubble baths or oils in the water. Showers may be taken as necessary and may be soothing for engorged or sore breasts.

Dissolvable stitches that poke through the skin may fall off themselves, perhaps in the shower from the force of the water or by rubbing against the fabric of your clothing. That’s because they’re continuing to dissolve under your skin.

How long does it take a vaginal tear to heal? Most women feel relief from any pain caused by a vaginal tear in about two weeks. If your tear required stitches, they will dissolve within six weeks.
