PRP has been shown in the research to be highly effective for treating rotator cuff tears, without the risks and expense of surgery. Additionally, as PRP injections are performed in the doctor’s office, there is no hospital stays or lengthy surgical recovery necessary.

However, patients referred to a specialist immediately following the diagnosis of a rotator cuff tear had total costs that averaged $25,870.64 and returned to work an average of 7 months postoperatively.

The precise amount of time needed to be off from work after rotator cuff surgery can vary from 3-8 months. If the rotator cuff is not given enough time to heal than the tear might recur.

This observation is supported by a study showing that in patients who have had rotator cuff surgery, strength in the shoulder muscles is not fully recovered until nine months after the surgery. As a result, it is normal to expect some continued symptoms of pain or soreness after rotator cuff surgery for several months.

Rotator cuff exercises

1. Lie flat on the back, extend the arms and legs, and engage the abdominal muscles.
2. Reach one arm toward the ceiling, lifting it until the shoulder blade comes off the floor.
3. Hold for 5 seconds.
4. Return arm to the floor.
5. Repeat on the other side.

How is rotator cuff tendinitis treated?

1. Ice. Putting ice bags or cold packs on the shoulder reduces inflammation and pain.
2. NSAIDs. These aspirin-like drugs (Motrin, ibuprofen, Nuprin, Naprosyn, Advil, Aleve, etc.)
3. Steroids. If other treatments do not work, steroid treatment may be used to reduce inflammation and pain.

In people with specific types of rotator cuff tears, the biceps tendon may not be tightly held in the groove—and may even snap out of the groove—causing a painful snapping sensation. When the tendon is unstable, it is called subluxation; when the tendon completely comes out of the groove, it is called a dislocation.

When the rotator becomes damaged, it causes the body to compensate and use other muscle groups in the shoulder to lift, push or pull objects. This compensation can strain to the muscles and result in pain in the area from the top of the shoulder into the neck.

A tear near the elbow will cause a “gap” in the front of the elbow. Your doctor will check your arm for damage to this area. In addition, rotator cuff injuries, impingement, and tendinitis are some conditions that may accompany a biceps tendon tear.
